My name is Melissa and I was a Girl Scout Mom, Camp Mom and Troop leader until the start of this school year. Girl Scouts is a terrific organization, but our 5th grade daughter wanted to put more focus on sports so something had to give.
Last year, my family started out with the intention of sending a case of cookies to our nephew on board The USS John C. Stennis CVN 74. Then our troop decided it would be even better if we raised as much money as we could and sent cookies to everyone. Through cookie booths, social media and word of mouth, our troop raised enough money to purchase and ship 200 boxes of cookies to the crew. The girls secured donations, purchased cookies, packaged boxes, and arranged for shipping to California from North Texas. From there, the cookies were loaded onto a Navy supply ship headed to the Persian Gulf.
The girls received periodic progress reports on shipping, letters of thanks and gifts of memorabilia from the ship. They got to see the positive impact from their act of kindness through the wonderful handmade thank you notes from VERY grateful sailors.
This year I thought we were finally out of the cookie business after five years of Girl Scouts. Then I got the call from my childhood best friend telling me that her son was headed out soon on The Eisenhower. I’m not looking forward to another round of worrying for months on end about a loved one, but I am VERY excited to have found a way to do this much BIGGER and better than last year. I have teamed up with three local Girl Scout troops, all led by AMAZING Scout moms and personal friends Julia & Anita. The girls from troops 7909, 2949 and 3154 are super excited and have already started raising money.
Thank you for supporting our troops
